What’s our web design process?

We’ve designed and built a few websites in our time, and one of the key lessons we’ve learned along the way is that every project needs a clear, well defined process that maintains flexibility to adapt to each unique project.

So that’s what we’ve developed.

01. Consultation & onboarding

It all starts with a chat – or a “consultation” if you want to be fancy about it.

This involves us chatting on the phone or over a coffee about your project, objectives, expectations and – the part some people find awkward – your budget.

Project scope

Once we’re on the same page, we’ll build out a project scope that outlines all of the requirements, deliverables and timelines for your new website.

The onboarding phase involves you giving us access to your website, hosting, Google Analytics and other accounts we’ll need to utilise to create your new site.

02. Site structure & content review
Site structure

All high performing websites need to have a well designed and laid out site structure – it’s the foundation of your website, and it plays a big part in your site’s SEO.

In this step we review your site structure and hierarchy to make sure we’re starting your project in the best position possible.

Content review

Websites are best built around the content that they’re housing – not the other way around. We’ll review your website content (copy, calls to action, images, video etc,) to ensure it’s up to the job.

Quality content is fundamental to your website’s performance in the search engines (ie getting found in Google), so it’s vital to make sure your website content is kicking goals before we design your new site.

If your website content needs to be further developed, we can help with that.

03. Wireframes & design prototypes

We dive deep into your target audence to understand what makes them tick, to ensure we can design your site for conversions. We’ll also review your top competitors to see what’s working, and how we can do it better for you.

Wireframes are basically line drawings on a piece of paper. This gives you and us a basic skeleton for how your new site will be laid out on the page.

Here’s where your website starts coming to life. We build out grey-scale page prototypes on a development server that demonstrate how your site will look and work. You’ll be able to view these in a web browser to get a feel for how your site will come together in ‘rea life’.

04. Design & build

This is where shit starts to get fun.

We’ll start adding colour, typography, images and much more really bring your new site to life.

You’ll be amazed to see a dull and boring greyscale web page transformed into a vibrant, eye catching and visually pleasing web browsing experience!

05. Test & launch

Once you’ve signed off on the design, we’ll perform a series of rigorous tests to ensure there’s no glitches or bugs, and that your new website is functioning perfectly.

From there, we’ll take care of the full launch to push your new site to all of your new customers.

06. Maintenance

It’s important to maintain your website to ensure it’s up to date with the latest security and software. Things change very quickly on the wolrd wide web, so it’s important to make sure your website stays healthy.

We provide website maintenance plans to take the hassle of maintaining your website on a weekly or monthly basis off your hands.

Frequently answered web design questions (FAQs)

How much does a website cost?

Whoahhhh! Good question, but a tough one to answer.

Websites come in all shapes, sizes and prices.

As with any product or service – the cheaper the website, the worse it will be.

Generally web design and development projects that we deliver range between $2,500 – $6,000.

Here’s a recent article we wrote about web design cost: how much does a website cost in Australia?.

This is just a ballpark figure, though. If you want a better idea, drop us a line or a quick chat about what you’re after, and a free quote.

How does your web design pricing work?

We quote each project based on the estimated number of hours it will take to research, design and build your site.

Our hourly rate is $90 per hour, and projects generally take a minimum of 40-50 hours of work to complete.

We’ll provide you with an estimated number of hours during our proposal process, which involves a scope of works to redesign and build your new website.

How long does it take to build a new website?

This depends on the size and purpose of your website – do you have a basic small business website, or are you running a large e-commerce website with 10,000 products?

Generally speaking, most of our projects take beteen 4-6 weeks to complete, however this depends massively on the extent of your project, how many assets you have, what you need your website to do etc.

Contact us for a chat and we can give you a ballpark timeline.

What CMS platforms / systems do you work with?

Generally we prefer to work with WordPress.

WordPress is the most widely used content management system in the world, and is super powerful. From our experience, WordPress is suitable for about 90% of businesses.

Can I see some of your work?

Yes! Of course you can – view our web design portfolio here.

Will you do our website for free?

Ha ha.
